How to Use: Poder (Regular Logic)

The Rule & Structure

The verb poder works like a normal verb. The person doing the favor is the subject of the sentence.

Conjugate poder according to the person you are asking (Tú or Usted).
Poder (conjugated) + Infinitive

Examples

Asking a friend — Tú
¿Puedes abrir la puerta?
Asking a stranger — Usted
¿Puede abrir la puerta?
Very polite to a stranger — Usted + Conditional
¿Podría abrir la puerta?

How to Use: Importar

The Rule & Structure

The verb importar works exactly like gustar. The subject is the action itself, not the person!

Me / Te / Le + importa / importaría + Infinitive
Use Te for Tú, and Le for Usted. The verb always stays in the 3rd-person singular.

Examples

Asking a friend — Tú
¿Te importa abrir la puerta?
Polite to a friend — Tú + Conditional
¿Te importaría abrir la puerta?
Polite to a stranger — Usted + Conditional
¿Le importaría abrir la puerta?
