Spanish tener is similar to English have.

Tener means to have or to possess something.

Tengo un libro.
I have a book.

Ella tiene un coche.
She has a car.

Like ser, tener changes according to the subject.

The conjugation of TENER

These are the six forms of tener in the present tense.

Tengo dieciocho años. I am eighteen years old.

Tienes veinte años. You are twenty years old.

Tiene cinco años. He / She is five years old.

Tenemos diecinueve años. We are nineteen years old.

Tenéis veintiún años. You are twenty-one years old.

Tienen treinta años. They are thirty years old.

In Spanish, we use tener + number + años to talk about age.

English: I am 18 years old.
Spanish: Tengo 18 años.

Do not use ser for age.
✓ Tengo 18 años.
✗ Soy 18 años.
