One thing or more than one?
A singular noun talks about one person, animal, place or thing. A plural noun talks about two or more.

Vowel at the end? Add -s.
noun ending in a vowel+ s
libro → librosbook → books
casa → casashouse → houses
estudiante → estudiantesstudent → students
Vowels: a, e, i, o, u. The new plural ending is easy to hear: libro-s.

Consonant at the end? Add -es.
noun ending in a consonant+ es
profesor → profesoresteacher → teachers
papel → papelespaper → papers
animal → animalesanimal → animals
A consonant is any letter that is not a vowel. For example: l, n, r.
04 / Rule 3
Final -z? Change it to -ces.
z→ ces
lápiz → lápicespencil → pencils
luz → luceslight → lights
vez → vecestime → times
Remove the final z, then add ces. Notice that the accent mark in lápiz disappears in lápices.
